Traditional Folk Flutes, Säckpipa, and Moraharpa with Stefan

Dalarna is a region of Sweden with a particularly rich folk tradition. Stefan manufactures several different recorder-like types of folk flute or "pipa" from different parts of Dalarna – Evertsberg, Leksand, Malung, and Djura, each with their own character and playing techniques. He also makes Swedish bagpipes or "säckpipa", following after the pioneering work of Leif Eriksson and Per Gudmundsson to revive this instrument in the 1980s. He also makes the moraharpa, a traditional keyed fiddle with an earthy tone that is an ancestor of the modern nyckelharpa. Stefan gives performance presentations on these instruments that offer a fascinating glimpse into the musical resourcefulness and creativity in Swedish folk tradition.

Techniques and Tunes for Irish Flute with Jennifer
– also applicable to other Celtic and Scandinavian genres

Jennifer shares tips and techniques for ornaments, blowing, phrasing etc. that can be applied to both the wooden simple-system flute most often used for Irish tunes and to the modern metal flute. These can be adapted to many different traditional genres as well, such as Old Time, Cape Breton, Swedish, Québecois, etc., with considerations for their stylistic differences. You can also learn how to translate ornamentation and style from other instruments onto the flute, such as the fiddle, pipes, etc. Whatever type of flute you play and whatever your background, Jennifer can tap into her own multi-genre background to offer practical hands-on guidance with direct application as you learn tunes.
